About Us

A few months after they met in Pittsburgh, Alex took Amy on a weekend backpacking trip to the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. It was March and even though the city of Pittsburgh had been snow-free for several weeks, the mountains, they soon found out, were not. They decided to send it anyway, and after a few miles of postholing through the snow, they reached a lean-to shelter to camp for the night. They immediately built a fire in the attached fireplace and propped up their boots on a log to dry them out. They monitored the shoes for a few hours before the crackling of the fire lulled them to sleep. They slept soundly and without worry that the flames might shift during the night…

When they awoke their boots were dry, but they were a bit overdone. Two of them were badly charred along the tops and sides. Alex’s left boot had melted completely. With no other options, they were forced to bail on the weekend by hiking out in their ruined boots and socks wrapped in plastic doggy bags. As they sat on the side of the road waiting to be rescued, Alex wondered, “would Amy ever want to go backpacking with me again?”

Five years later, they got engaged on the Appalachian Trail…

Alex

Alex was first introduced to backpacking during his time in Boy Scouts, back in 2011. There, he completed many treks throughout his home state of Pennsylvania, a section of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, and an epic route through Philmont, New Mexico.

In addition to backpacking, he is an avid rock climber and pretends to be a runner though he would rather hike. He loves listening to music, reading, writing, and coding in his down time.

He works full time as a software engineer building web apps. He is enjoying his final years of employment before AI makes him obsolete. At that point, there will be nothing else for humanity to do except recreate outdoors, so you can expect an uptick in blog post frequency.

Amy began hiking at an early age with her grandmother in the mountains of North Carolina. She dreamed of completing the entire Appalachian Trail after completing a one-mile stretch to Siler Bald. Once she met Alex, it was easy to convince him to join her on the journey of a lifetime. She set the start date of their thru-hike – two days after graduating from college.

Her degree is in Computer Engineering and she works full-time as an electrical engineer. She enjoys tinkering with circuit boards and aspires to someday build robots that will clean the house for her.

She loves to run and is currently training for a half-marathon. She also enjoys reading, climbing, coffee, and making lists for everything.
